The Dark Knight Returns: An Older Batman with Less Patience
Cayla's excitement about The Dark Knight Returns comes from the version of Batman it places at the center. Older does not mean gentler. She enjoys a figure who acts with force and certainty, while finding some of the opposing gang less compelling than the hero confronting it.
Matt's revisit also improves his opinion. Part One feels stronger than he remembers, and he particularly likes the sheer physical presence of this Batman. The animation style is not entirely to his taste, but he recognizes its connection to the comic's visual identity.
The two-part format gives the group something else to compare. Matt enjoys the first section more than the second, which prevents the discussion from becoming one broad verdict applied equally to every part. An adaptation can successfully bring a character to the screen while varying in momentum across its length.
Their shared interest is in seeing a familiar hero at a different stage of life. The attraction is not simply another suit or another fight. Age changes the attitude behind the action and lets them ask which parts of Batman become stronger, harsher, or less comfortable over time.
Does this older Batman feel like a natural continuation or a troubling exaggeration? Which part works better for you, and how much does the animation style influence your response?
