The Shadow: A Little Cheese Can Be Part of the Charm
Matt has lived with The Shadow for years. Cayla arrives without knowing much about either the character or the film, and that contrast gives their conversation its pleasure. A familiar favorite becomes a discovery for someone else.
Cayla enjoys the goofiness rather than needing to defend the movie against it. The sets, costumes, and period atmosphere make the world inviting, and Alec Baldwin's performance works for her. The altered appearance in the Shadow costume is one detail she finds less persuasive, but it does not spoil the fun.
Dan is similarly drawn to the visual environment, especially the older cars and the network of informants that makes the hero's world feel active. Their conversation also explores connections they see with later superhero traditions, without making recognizability the only reason to enjoy the movie.
Matt knows it is not an unqualified great film. What he values is a different flavor of superhero adventure, one he wishes had found more room to continue. Cayla's fresh enthusiasm helps explain that affection: a movie can be awkward in places and still create a world worth returning to.
Did The Shadow's period style win you over, or did its campier moments interrupt the adventure? Is there room for more superhero films that feel this different from the dominant modern format?
