Lisa Frankenstein: Weird Enough to Surprise Matt
Matt is not ordinarily drawn to romantic comedies, but Zelda Williams's directing debut and Cole Sprouse give him reasons to try Lisa Frankenstein. He has seen only one trailer. Coming in without a complete map of the movie turns out to be part of the pleasure.
His reaction is less a claim of perfection than a defense of having fun. He does not think the plot or performances need to be the best of their kind for this particular experience to work. The combination of sweetness, creepiness, and humor catches him by surprise, and its strangeness reminds him of early Tim Burton.
That comparison describes the feeling he takes away rather than a demand that the film become something else. Matt appreciates being offered an odd little world and finding that he wants to spend time in it. He laughs, enjoys the weirdness, and leaves feeling that Williams has made a strong first impression.
Did Lisa Frankenstein's strange tone pull you in, or keep you at a distance? Have you ever enjoyed a movie more because you went in knowing almost nothing about it?
