The Omen: Starting a Horror Series with a Slow-Burning Favorite

For the first Nightmares & Scares episode, Dan and Matt choose a film that can make a quiet room feel unsafe. Their conversation about The Omen keeps coming back to the difference between startling an audience and making it anxious. Dan responds especially strongly to the latter: the sense that ordinary events are becoming part of something terrible before anyone can quite prove it.

The performances give that unease a human center. Dan praises Gregory Peck and the cast for making the situation convincing even as its implications grow more extreme. The film is not simply asking viewers to be frightened of a child. It is asking them to follow adults who are gradually losing the explanations that make their world manageable.

Matt's detailed recap makes room for questions along the way. Images, warnings, and apparent coincidences become things the two can interpret together. Their conversation has the feeling of watching the movie again with someone who keeps pausing to ask whether you noticed that particular look or connection.

They do acknowledge slower stretches, but neither considers patience a failure in itself. Dan gives the film nine out of ten. Matt settles at eight and a half after first proposing eight. These are the original ten-point ratings from the episode, and both reflect admiration for a film whose atmosphere continues to work for them.

As an opening choice for their horror series, it also establishes what they want from these conversations: room for affection, questions, nitpicking, and the pleasure of noticing why something still gets under their skin.

Does The Omen's measured pace make the dread stronger, or do some stretches test your patience? Which unsettles you more here: the supernatural possibility or the adults' growing uncertainty?
