28 Days Later: The Film That Made Matt Want to Make One
Before Dan and Matt get far into 28 Days Later, Dan makes a distinction: these are infected people, not the conventional walking dead. It sounds like a genre argument, but it gets at the urgency both men respond to. This threat does not shuffle politely toward the characters. It changes the speed and texture of the whole survival story.
For Matt, the connection runs beyond admiration. He explains that the film helped inspire his own early project, The Infected. That makes this episode partly a conversation about what happens when a movie stops being something you watch and starts becoming something you want to try making. His enthusiasm has a practical, personal history behind it.
Dan is drawn to the film's rough visual character. The grainy digital images do not strike him as an obstacle to be excused; they help create the experience. The abandoned London sequences are a particular point of admiration. A familiar city emptied of ordinary life can be more unnerving than a constant procession of creatures.
Their long recap gives way to agreement about the film's place in their horror viewing. Dan lands at nine out of ten. Matt initially has eight and a half in mind, then moves to nine as well. Those are the original ten-point scores, and the slight adjustment captures the mood: talking through the movie makes Matt want to give it a little more credit.
What stays with their conversation is the combination of scale and immediacy. An entire world has fallen apart, but the film's power comes through people trying to understand the next room, the next road, and the next person they meet.
Does the rough digital look make 28 Days Later more frightening for you? And is there a movie that made you want to create something of your own?
