The Nightmare Before Christmas: A Favorite That Leaves Seth Cold
The Nightmare Before Christmas gives several people in the group a world they are happy to revisit at any time of year. Seth does not feel that invitation. The music, visual style, and story keep him outside a film whose appeal the others find immediately recognizable.
Cayla gives it eight and a half out of ten, responding to the fun of the songs and the imaginative storytelling. Seth gives it two. His explanation is not a list of technical failures so much as an honest account of a sensibility that does not connect with him.
Dan's interest in the stop-motion work offers another route into the film. The physical effort behind the images makes him look more closely at faces, movement, and visual detail. Even a world built to feel strange depends on careful, tangible construction.
The wide gap is the point of the conversation. Familiarity and acclaim cannot make someone enjoy a style they resist, while affection can be strengthened by noticing how much work supports its apparent ease.
Do the songs and handmade world make this film irresistible to you, or do you understand Seth's reaction? Is it a Halloween film, a Christmas film, or one you do not reserve for either?
