Rocketman: Once Matt Knows What Kind of Musical It Is, the Door Opens
Cayla picks Rocketman with an affection for music used as storytelling, not merely as something a character performs onstage. She likes watching the songs connect to the emotional changes in Elton John's life. The pleasure of the numbers exists alongside the difficulty of what the story depicts.
Matt's first encounter had been less comfortable. He expected a conventional biopic and was thrown by songs appearing outside their real-world chronology. Revisiting with a clearer sense of the film's musical approach changes the experience. He can respond to what it is doing instead of measuring it against a different format.
Both praise Taron Egerton. Cayla thinks the performance deserved more recognition, while Matt likes the balance between suggesting a recognizable person and avoiding a mere imitation. The voice and acting become part of a complete interpretation.
The relationship with Bernie also gives them an emotional center beyond celebrity and spectacle. Creative closeness and personal loyalty offer a different kind of connection from the approval the central character keeps seeking elsewhere.
What makes their conversation useful is that a changed expectation produces a changed response. Knowing that the songs are expressing a story rather than documenting a set list lets Matt appreciate choices that previously pushed him away.
Did Rocketman's fantasy elements bring you closer to the emotions, or did you prefer its more grounded scenes? Have you ever enjoyed a film more after realizing it belonged to a different kind of story than you expected?
