Beautiful Boy: The Family's Pain Is What Stays with Matt

Beautiful Boy made a lasting impression on Matt when he first saw it, and his discussion returns to the perspective that gives it force. The story lets him feel addiction's effects on a family, rather than confining the experience to the person using drugs.

The central question is agonizingly ordinary: how far can a father keep going, and when has he done everything he can? Steve Carell's performance makes that question feel immediate to Matt. Love remains powerful without becoming an uncomplicated solution.

Timothée Chalamet is equally important to his response. Matt credits this film with making him a committed admirer of the actor, drawn to the changes in the character rather than only to a convincing depiction of distress.

He describes the film as emotionally raw and difficult to watch, but worthwhile for precisely that reason. The recommendation is not for an easy evening. It is for a drama that makes the damage reach beyond one person's choices and into the people who cannot stop caring.

Did the family's perspective make Beautiful Boy more affecting for you? How does a film show the limits of helping someone without suggesting that love has failed?
