Hocus Pocus 2: Familiar Faces, Missing Mischief
The return of the Sanderson sisters gives Dan, Cayla, and Matt a reason to watch Hocus Pocus 2. It does not give them the feeling they remember from the original. Their conversation keeps separating recognition from recapturing a tone.
Dan finds the musical moments forced, as though their presence has been decided by the need to remind viewers of a past pleasure. He misses the original's mixture of humor and menace. Cayla and Matt also question the gentler treatment of characters whose willingness to harm children had been central to their earlier identity.
There are bits they appreciate, including the chance to see Billy Butcherson again and some comic interplay. But those returns bring continuity questions of their own. Familiarity makes them more attentive to changes in behavior and characterization, rather than more willing to overlook them.
The ending is a particular source of dissatisfaction, although their broader objection is already clear without revealing it. They do not think affection for the sisters automatically makes a different emotional direction convincing. A sequel needs to earn the shift.
Their response is a caution about nostalgia as a creative strategy. Bringing back the performers can satisfy curiosity for an evening while still leaving viewers wanting to return to the earlier film next Halloween.
Did you enjoy seeing a softer side of the sisters, or miss their nastier edge? What does a long-delayed sequel need besides the original cast to become part of your yearly rewatch?
