1408: How Much Horror Can One Room Hold?
The group approaches 1408 with a useful contrast already built into its setting. A haunted hotel offers endless corridors and possibilities; a single haunted room has to keep finding new ways to trap both its occupant and its audience.
Dan, a Stephen King reader with a collection of the books, finds the adaptation solid without placing it among his favorites. He appreciates John Cusack's performance and the hotel manager's attempts to discourage him from entering. Those warnings sell the danger before the room has to demonstrate it.
His reservations concern what happens when a short story becomes a feature. The limited space can concentrate the horror, but it can also make him feel the material being stretched. He raises the practical question many viewers will recognize: with this history, why has the room not simply been closed off?
His five out of ten makes room for both responses. The performances can convince him in individual moments without making the whole experience equally compelling. That distinction gives the conversation something more useful than a simple verdict on whether the movie is scary.
Does the single-room setting make 1408 more frightening, or make its tricks easier to notice? What warning would have persuaded you to stay out?
